Honouring Local Heritage: Our Spitfire Makers Blue Plaque
We’re incredibly proud to share that a blue plaque has now been installed at our premises as part of the Spitfire Makers initiative.
The plaque recognises the historical significance of this site, which was once home to The Solent Carpet Company. Established in the 1920s, the factory played an important role during the Second World War, adapting its production to support the war effort. Among its many contributions, the site manufactured components for the iconic Spitfire aircraft - an extraordinary piece of local and national history.
Being part of the Spitfire Makers programme means helping to preserve and celebrate the stories of the people and places that contributed to Britain’s wartime efforts. It’s a real privilege for us at Solent Blinds & Curtains to be connected to that legacy and to help keep it visible within our community.
The plaque was installed on Thursday with the support of Shirley Men’s Shed, and we’d like to extend our thanks for their help in marking this moment.
We believe it’s important to recognise the history around us - not just in books, but in the very buildings and spaces we use every day. This plaque serves as a lasting reminder of the craftsmanship, innovation, and resilience that once defined this site.
If you’re passing by, do take a moment to stop and read it - we’re proud to be part of its continuing story.
